Henry Swepson Whitehead (1820-1892) was a Veteran of the Mexican War & served in the Confederate Cavalry. He settled with his wife, Elizabeth Ann Veal(e) (1932-1880) & their six children on a 70-acre farm near this site in 1873. Their oldest daughter, Minnie (1856-1877), while dying from Tuberculosis, asked to be buried under two oak trees she could see on a neighbor’s land. This led to the purchase & establishment of this resting place on September 20, 1877. Veterans of World War I & World War II are among the generations honored here. It continues to be cared for by Whitehead Family descendants.
